Q. What material is the nonstick in Hamilton Beach® and Proctor Silex® cookware made from? Can it be harmful if ingested?
A. Hamilton Beach® and Proctor Silex® non-stick is made of Polytetraflourethylene; more commonly known as PTFE. PTFE is a slick plastic that, under normal conditions, keeps food from sticking. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that PTFE nonstick is safe for food contact. The coating is nontoxic and will just pass through the body if ingested.
Q. Why is low to medium heat recommended for your cookware?
A. We suggest a low to medium setting to prevent warping, staining, scorching, burning, and damage to the non-stick surface. It will also help to cook your food more evenly.
Q. Is my cookware oven safe? If so, to what temp?
A. Because this information is line specific we ask that you please visit the specific Use and Care informational area of the website and look for your specific cookware.
Q. How should I care for my glass lids?
A. To prevent breaking please do not place your lids on a burner or under a broiler. Also, do not handle a hot glass cover with a damp or wet cloth/ potholder and allow the lid to cool completely before immersing in water.
Q. What is the “rainbow” appearance/ discoloration on my stainless steel cookware and how do I remove it?
A. When stainless steel is exposed to high heat or washed with water that has a high mineral content, your stainless cookware can discolor. If this occurs, clean your cookware with a non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner. This color will not affect the performance of your cookware, just the appearance.
